Cheers Spike. Yep, The bumper lights should only operate when the tailgate is open. It is a requirement for MOT that cars have rear facing lights, and if the tailgate is open on the Q3/Q5 it would not have "rear facing" lights without the bumper lights coming on. Most cars have their rear lights on either side of the tailgate so it is not an issue.

It does seem most odd that the high mount brake lamp works but the reverse lights do not. It would appear the J393 is basically functional. There's three fuses of relevance in the left rear: fuses 9 and 11 in column 1 (black 12-fuse), and fuse 14 in column 3 (brown 16-fuse). The high mount brake lamp and the license plate lamps run off a 32-pin.

You can see the two 30A and one 20A fuse for that in the OPs second picture. But that just a single rear light stopped working would make it unlikely a fuse issue. If it wasn't a bulb issue, then likely a wiring issue. If the bulbs were in fact blown, then maybe a short in the line.

Each bumper light unit has a single, common, earth wire so again, if the bumper tail lights work when the tailgate is raised, an earth fault is unlikely. The connector that is in the right side compartment that connects the brake lights was not seated properly so after I took it apart and firmly seated it everything is working fine again. An erratic problem in that that front rhs headlight, fog light, indicator plus the number plate light and a couple of right and left rear brake lights all stop working. Nothing constant causes it to happen, bulbs all ok. Happened 8 months ago, after several visits to garage they eventually replaced.

I have seen a lot of topics about it and mostly is the Hall sensor in a wrong place or the micro-switches in the lock in the tailgate are damaged. I have checked both.
